To promote interaction and exchange between scholarship students enrolled in its International Higher Education Scholarship Program at member universities of the Taiwan International Cooperation Alliance (TICA), the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) regularly cultivates team spirit and builds mutual friendships and solidarity with the organization through fun, sport and competition.

As part of these efforts, the TaiwanICDF and TICA have organized the TICA Cup every year since 2007. Now in its seventh year, this year’s event, which will take place at I-Shou University, Kaohsiung, on December 21, will involve the participation of more than 400 overseas scholarship students enrolled at 20 TICA universities, altogether hailing from 31 countries.

The opening ceremony for this year’s event will be co-chaired by I-Shou Vice President Huang Yung-sheng and TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Dr. Lee Pai-po. The program includes a tug-of-war, team relays, three-legged races and similar activities designed to get students moving and relieve the stress of busy academic lives through physical exercise and fitness. The event will help students to stretch body and mind, and strengthen team spirit and their sense of belonging for their universities and the TaiwanICDF, as well as cultivate the spirit of humility in victory and grace in defeat that sport engenders.

Since the TaiwanICDF’s TICA universities are spread throughout Taiwan, it is not always easy for overseas scholarship students to meet one another, so the TICA Cup not only offers students the opportunity to get together with fellow students from other institutions, but also offers the chance to be contacted by faculties at other universities, expanding their learning horizons and forming an international network.

The TaiwanICDF has actively promoted know-how as part of its overseas aid in recent years, assisting partners to cultivate human resources. Since 1998, 1,157 government officials and professionals from 53 countries have come to Taiwan as part of the TaiwanICDF scholarship program, which now offers a total of 30 English-language bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. programs at 20 Taiwanese universities. On returning home after graduation, many graduates apply what they have learned in Taiwan to support their country’s national development, often going on to become key government officials.
