Love Without Borders: TaiwanICDF Releases Sixth Online Film, “Humanity”

The TaiwanICDF has been releasing a series of short, online films every two months over the course of 2012, each of which has been designed to raise public awareness of key international issues and show how the organization is assisting its partners to develop sustainably.

Today (January 2) sees the release of Chinese and English versions of the organization’s sixth and final short film of the year, Humanity, which sees the focus return to the universal spirit of humanitarianism. The TaiwanICDF hopes that highlighting its assistance efforts in South Sudan and Kenya in Africa, and in other countries in need following major disasters occurring elsewhere throughout the world, will encourage the public to maintain its compassion whenever overseas disasters strike, and to uphold the principle of “Love Without Borders” by lending a timely helping hand.

Looking back at major events in Africa in 2011, two events in particular which caused widespread concern amongst the international community were a severe drought in the Horn of Africa, and a crisis in the world’s youngest country, South Sudan.

In the four countries comprising the Horn of Africa – Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Djibouti – the greatest movement of refugees occurred in northeast Kenya, leading the TaiwanICDF to cooperate with Mercy Corps on a drought relief project, which initially involved major repairs to and the reconstruction of water resources throughout the region, in order to address local water shortages.

Elsewhere, South Sudan had become the world’s newest country following its independence, but at the same time remained one of the world's poorest countries, with low levels of development. It was also beset by internal disputes. This led the TaiwanICDF to implement a project – Support to IDPs, Returnees and Host Communities in South Sudan – in Abyei, a region along the disputed border between South Sudan and Sudan, where the dispute over sovereignty had caused severe unrest on the ground, causing acute food shortages when local farmers missed their usual planting schedules. Working in cooperation with Mercy Corps, the TaiwanICDF had therefore sought to relieve local food shortages through emergency aid, which was also expected to increase local food production and improve the local agricultural environment.

Viewers are welcome to learn more about the story in South Sudan and Kenya by watching Humanity at the TaiwanICDF’s official site, as well as at its YouTube and Facebook pages.

As globalization progresses, countries are becoming closer and solidarity is taking hold. As shown in Humanity, this has meant that the TaiwanICDF has never ceased to provide assistance in the event of major disasters, helping its partners to steer their way clear of such crises. The organization hopes that ever greater numbers will identify with its emergency assistance efforts within a global village where “love knows no borders,” so that together, their care and compassion can bring respite to precious lives beset by crises.
