The TaiwanICDF Higher Education Scholarship Programs held its first International Cooperation Development Summer Camp in 2010 to provide a great way of enhancing students’ knowledge of international cooperation and development, and to help Taiwanese and international students to get to know each other better. Following its successful experience of holding the event over the past two years, the TaiwanICDF expanded this year’s camp, which drew to a successful activities during August 15 to 18 at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.

Sixty-three students attended the four-day camp, which was conducted entirely in English. Unlike previous camps, this year’s event was organized around five main issues: economic development and environmental protection; public health in developing countries; the role of bridging the digital divide in international development aid; issues in global food security; and the role of overseas volunteers in international cooperation and development. Instructors gave students a short briefing at the beginning of each course, followed by questions designed to encourage students to search for information and elicit discussion. The TaiwanICDF’s aim was to stimulate enthusiasm among young students’ for international affairs through brainstorming, as well as to strengthen interaction between local students and foreign students on matters relating to international affairs.

During the closing ceremony, participants reported that they had gained a practical understanding of all of the issues discussed during the course. They said that the event had broadened their international point of view, and also said that they hoped that the TaiwanICDF would continue to organize similar events in the future.
