Project Description:The project aims to improve the quality of fruits and vegetables produced as part of the Royal Project in northern Thailand by enhancing technical exchange between Taiwanese and Thai agricultural specialists, as well as increase interaction between Taiwan and ASEAN countries, thereby facilitating the future development of cooperative, multilateral relationships.
Overall this project will:

  1. Introduce vegetable and fruit varieties for trial selection and adaptation; conduct yield-oriented trials to select varieties that are well-adapted to the climate in the northern highlands of Thailand; extend verified, high-yield varieties to farmers for mass cultivation and production.
  2. Establish a passion fruit tissue culture technique that can produce virus-free plantlets and extend such plantlets to farmers to renew their stock of seedlings.
  3. Produce grafted seedlings of kumquat and purple passion fruit for extension and demonstrate such grafting techniques to farmers; arrange for Royal Project stakeholders to take a study tour to Taiwan and invite Taiwanese experts to visit the Royal Project, as well as organize training workshops and a regional agriculture symposium.

Project Objectives:The objectives of this project are:

  1. Establish a passion fruit tissue culture technique and produce 500 passion fruit plantlets to extend to 50 farmers; conduct experimental tissue culture MS media and harden 250-300 passion fruit tissue culture plantlets.
  2. Produce grafted seedlings and transfer the grafting technique to 12 farmers/groups; train 30 Royal Project extension staff and work with 900 farmers both directly and indirectly.
  3. Provide assistance to arrange for 15-30 personnel with the Royal Project to visit Taiwan for training; arrange for 2-4 Taiwanese experts to visit Thailand to engage in technical exchange; provide training on citrus fruits, passion fruit, strawberry, mushroom and astringent persimmon.
  4. Organize at least one regional agriculture symposium.

Project Performance:

  1. Introduced two varieties of mushroom and four varieties of citrus for adaptability trials.
  2. Adopted seedling tips to produce virus-free tissue culture plantlets for cultivation; sowed 100 purple passion fruit and yellow passion fruit seeds at the tissue culture lab at Kasetsart University.
  3. Completed grafting of 300 kumquat seedlings using citrus as a rootstock, recording the height and diameter during the growing stage; also completed grafting of 120 passion fruit seedlings.
  4. Held a passion fruit training workshop for the benefit of 25 persons, including six extension staff, six Royal Project staff and 80 farmers.
  5. Arranged study tours to Taiwan for project administrators and , mushroom, citrus and passion fruit specialists.
