Project Name:Project of Expansion and Rehabilitation of Philip Goldson Highway (Belize)

    Project status:Projects in Operation

    Cooperating Country:Belize

    Project Description:

The Philip Goldson Highway is a key artery in Belize’s road network, linking Belize City to the Mexican border. It serves as an important transport corridor for the movement of agricultural and livestock products and supports major economic activities, including trade, tourism, industry, and services.

TaiwanICDF, in co-finanicing with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), provides a loan to the Government of Belize for the rehabilitation and upgrading of a section of the Philip Goldson Highway from Mile 8.5 to Mile 24.5, covering approximately 25.75 km.

The major works include: (1) upgrading the pavement; (2) enhancing drainage by raising the road level and rehabilitating and expanding the drainage system; (3) expanding the roadway cross-section by standardizing lane widths and adding shoulders, center lines, and sidewalks, while widening high-traffic sections from two lanes to four lanes and constructing roundabouts at intersections; (4) reinforcing bridge structures; (5) improving the existing alignment; and (6) enhancing safety measures through the installation of safety features such as guardrails.

TaiwanICDF’s loan is used entirely to finance the civil works.

    Project Objectives:

The Project aims to reduce transportation costs, improve accessibility and road safety, and thereby promote regional trade and economic development.

    Executing Agency:

Ministry of Infrastructure, Development and Housing of Belize

    Implementation Arrangement:

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing serves as the Executing Agency for the Project. CABEI administers and supervises the overall Project, including the Project activities financed by the TaiwanICDF, in accordance with its applicable policies and procedures.
