Project Description:
The Flood Warning Capacity Improvement for the Belize River Basin (FWCIBRB) Project has been developed as an expansion to the Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention Project (BURDPP). Under the FWCIBRB, flood early warning systems developed for the San Ignacio area will be expanded upon. This is expected to assist the government of Belize with disaster management. Capacity building opportunities will be provided to enhance Belizean disaster prevention and relief departments’ technical capabilities.

Project Objectives:
- Updated disaster prevention maps.
- Improve disaster preparation capabilities.
- Introduce monitoring technologies.
- Strengthen disaster response in flood-prone areas in the Belize River basin.

Current Progress:
By the end of March 2025, this project has reached the following milestones:
- Conducted 2 disaster response rapid deployment team training in Taiwan for 10 Belizean participants, with invitations extended to Belize’s minister and deputy minister of sustainable development.
- Established 5 hydrometeorological stations .
- Established 1 disaster prevention demonstration community in Santa Familia, assist the community in repairing one emergency disaster prevention radio, and provide one batch of disaster relief supplies.
- Updated the digital elevation models for San Ignacio, Belmopan, and Belize City.
- Completed the base mapping including hydrology, disaster prevention facilities, topography, satellite imagery, roads, and lifeline utilities.
- Based on imagery and hydrological data, complete flood potential maps for the cities of Belmopan, San Ignacio and Belize City.
- Conducted 2 drone training sessions for disaster assessment, training a total of 11 personnel from the Belize Hydrology Department, Meteorological Service, NEMO, and the Fire Department.
- Conducted 12 disaster prevention education promotion activities and 1 youth disaster prevention forum.
- Hold one map data collection training session.
- Conducted one maintenance training session for the early‑warning system monitoring stations, training 7 personnel from the Belize Hydrology Department and the Meteorological Service.
- Conducted one early‑warning system platform training session, training 9 personnel from the Belize Hydrology Department, the Meteorological Service, NEMO, and the Policy & Planning Unit.
