Project Name:Date Palm Cultivation and Tissue Culture Consultant Dispatch Project (Saudi Arabia)

Project Description:

The Republic of China dispatches consultants to the resident Taiwan Technical Mission to carry out agricultural technical assistance with Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the Agreement of Agricultural Cooperation between the Republic of China Government Represented by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian Government. The main tasks of the technical consultants of Taiwan Technical Mission include: 1. Understanding and assessing the annual needs of the Saudi partner agencies and formulating the annual work plan; 2. Providing project progress reports and final reports in accordance with project management procedures; 3. Delivering consultancy services based on the key focus areas of the project implementation.

Executing Agency:

Current Progress:

As of March 2026, the following activities have been completed:

1. All work items under this project for the current quarter are progressing in accordance with the planned schedule. The mission continues to apply tissue culture techniques to support the conservation and propagation of plant varieties in Saudi Arabia. Key achievements include the cultivation of two endangered date palm varieties, the preservation of 50 date palm germplasm and four potato germplasm, the establishment of micropropagation techniques for three valuable varieties, and a cumulative planting area reaching 3.85 hectares, thereby enhancing varietal diversity and the potential for diversified development of Saudi Arabia’s date palm industry.

2. The project provides advisory services to the National Center for Agriculture and Animal Resources of Saudi Arabia on tissue culture operations for date palms and essential oil roses, as well as the preparation of plant growth regulators, while strengthening technical capacity through hands-on training and on-site guidance. In addition, in response to Saudi Arabia’s demand for the development of diversified high-value crops, research on saffron tissue culture techniques has been initiated, including primary culture trials, to promote overall industry development.
