Project Name:Aquaculture Project (Phase II) in the Kingdom of Eswatini
Project status:Projects in Operation
Cooperating Country:Africa, Kingdom of Eswatini
Project Description:
The Kingdom of Eswatini is rich in river resources, but over 90% of its aquaculture products are imported. The aquaculture industry is primarily small-scale, family-based, and lacks commercial production models. Through the Aquaculture Project, the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) has helped establish a solid foundation for aquaculture in Eswatini and ensured a secure supply of fish fry. Eswatini has proposed this project to help these family-based aquaculture operations transition to commercial operations, promote large-scale aquaculture, develop reservoir cages and irrigation canal aquaculture, and increase the cultivation of local river fish species to meet domestic market demand, reduce Eswatini's reliance on aquaculture product imports, improve rural incomes, and promote food security and nutritional diversity. The project aims to popularize commercial aquaculture models and promotion systems. Key objectives are as follows: 1. Establish regional supply systems for fingerlings and develop potential aquaculture species; 2. Establish commercial fish farms, streamlining processing, and developing sales channels; 3. Build capacity within the commercial aquaculture promotion system; and 4. Promote Taiwan's agricultural science and technology.
Implementation Start Date:2026-01-01
Implementation End Date:2029-12-31
Project Objectives:
An estimated 10% of the country's households engaged in aquaculture will be able to achieve commercial aquaculture models. By the end of the project, the goal is to ensure that freshwater aquaculture product production meets 20 percent of national demand.
