TaiwanICDF Launches Five-Year Project to Support Fiji’s White Shrimp Industry

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries on Jan. 20 officially launched the “Fiji White Shrimp Industry Development Project” at the TaiwanICDF TTM Training Center in Nausori. Over the next five years, the two sides will collaborate through technical cooperation and industry guidance to help Fiji establish a complete white shrimp value chain, encourage local private investment and upgrade the aquaculture sector.

The launch ceremony was chaired by TaiwanICDF Team Leader Tim Hsiao, with a project presentation delivered by aquaculture specialist Chan Shao-chun. Senior ministry officials in attendance included Acting Permanent Secretary Saimone Tauvoli, Director of Fisheries Nanise Kuridrani, Head of the Aquaculture Section Alok Kalla and Acting West Division Chief Epeli Tawake, underscoring strong consensus between Taiwan and Fiji on advancing the white shrimp industry.

As part of efforts to diversify and sustainably develop Fiji’s aquaculture sector, the ministry earlier released its 2025–2028 Aquaculture Development Plan and invited TaiwanICDF to assist in building the white shrimp value chain. The new project builds on previous achievements, selecting white shrimp for their high commercial potential and focusing on institutional development and industry incubation. Key initiatives include establishing a shrimp fry quarantine facility, creating a stable fry supply system, conducting feed research and innovation, strengthening farmer training and capacity-building, and formulating an overall industry development strategy to gradually establish a commercially viable shrimp sector in Fiji.

TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Peifen Hsieh said the project aims to move white shrimp farming beyond TTM demonstration results and develop it into an attractive industry for local private investment. She added that TaiwanICDF will establish a Taiwan Aquaculture Technology Incubation Center at the existing Caboni Aquaculture Station to provide investment promotion and matchmaking, startup and farm incubation support, professional training, smart aquaculture technology applications, and cold-chain and downstream logistics assistance. These efforts are intended to enhance product quality and competitiveness, integrate upstream and downstream segments of the industry, and ultimately build a commercially scaled white shrimp industry in Fiji.
