TaiwanICDF Supports Women Entrepreneurs in Eswatini for the Fifth Consecutive Year

Release Date: January 23, 2025

In the 12th episode of the video series Team Taiwan Supports the World released today (13th), the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) documents Taiwan’s efforts assisting African ally Eswatini through a recent development aid project. Through initiatives like microenterprise mentoring and financial assistance, the project empowers women to start businesses, injecting sustainable momentum into Eswatini’s socio-economic development.

The video opens with Eswatini locals shouting “Love to fight, dare to win” in Mandarin, highlighting the close cooperation between Taiwan and Eswatini. Since 2019, the TaiwanICDF has partnered with the Eswatini government to promote women’s entrepreneurship training and microloans, gradually building the foundation for female entrepreneurship.

In 2020, the TaiwanICDF launched the Capacity Building for Eswatini Women’s Microfinance Institutions Project, which focuses on training financial personnel and improving the service quality of financial institutions. This initiative strengthened the local microfinance system, making it easier for women to access startup capital.

In 2023, the TaiwanICDF expanded on those efforts through implementation of the Women’s Microenterprise Mentorship Enhancement Project, helping women develop basic business management and technical skills to improve overall market competitiveness. To date, more than 600 individuals have improved their livelihoods and expanded their businesses through training and microfinance support provided as a result of these initiatives.

In the video, Taiwan Technical Mission in Eswatini leader Hsueh Hsuan-ping says that these projects—along with the Women’s Entrepreneurship Microcredit Revolving Fund, which is also jointly implemented with the TaiwanICDF—help tackle both skill-building and funding challenges. These programs help women-run businesses such as restaurants, farms, and small shops gradually establish stable income sources. Most participants are able to repay their loans, creating a positive feedback loop.

Sipho Inncent Dlamini, Principal of the Eswatini Cooperative Development College, also expressed appreciation for the establishment of savings and credit cooperatives, which provide microloans to support the growth of small and medium enterprises.

TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary-General Peifen Hsieh said that these initiatives align with Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung’s Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project. Through system development, capacity building, and financial support, they address Eswatini’s real needs in women’s employment, microenterprise growth, and community resilience—helping women establish stable and sustainable livelihoods.
