TaiwanICDF Hosts WHA Side Event to Highlight Taiwan’s Soft Power

At the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA), the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) will host a WHA side event titled Empowering through Inclusive Healthcare: Leveraging Smart Technologies for Accessibility. Held on May 20 in Geneva, Switzerland, this forum will explore the application of smart technologies in the public health and medical fields. Representatives from allied nations’ health ministries, international NGOs, and academia will speak at the event, discussing their experiences with, and understanding of, these technologies. The talks will cover policy, implementation, and community engagement perspectives.

This marks the eighth consecutive year that the TaiwanICDF will host a side event during the WHA. This year’s event will showcase Taiwan’s contributions to international cooperation in smart healthcare and emphasize the importance of technology transfer, local engagement, and systemic support in multilateral partnerships. The forum will be moderated by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Chief Medical Officer Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache. Opening remarks will be delivered by Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Tai-yuan, with TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Peifen Hsieh delivering the closing remarks.

Keynote speaker Paraguayan Vice Minister of Health Jose Ortellado will share how the TaiwanICDF has helped improve public health management in Paraguay through the introduction of Taiwanese technology. Dr. Mirana Michelle Randriambelonoro from the University of Geneva will present on telemedicine applications in Nepal and Mali. TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary General Mr. Stephen J.H. Lee will showcase smart healthcare initiatives implemented by the agency around the world. Terre des Hommes Digital Health Manager Kallol Mukherji will discuss the use of new technologies for maternal and newborn care, and Pape Amadou Gaye, who is a board member at Transform Health—a coalition of over 200 medical organizations—will share insights on community-level applications of emerging technologies.

In addition, the TaiwanICDF will premiere its newly produced video titled “Smart Healthcare, A Shared Healthy Future," during the forum. Through the video and in-person dialogue, the event aims to raise awareness among WHA participants about Taiwan’s soft power in foreign aid, particularly in technical assistance and capacity building.
