TaiwanICDF Launches Medical Training Program for Allies

The first set of courses under the TaiwanICDF’s Medical Talent Development Program for Diplomatic Allies has launched with an opening ceremony held today (May 13). A total of 14 medical personnel from six countries, including Eswatini, Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines participated in the training. Following the opening ceremony, the participants headed off for clinical training at eight hospitals in Taiwan. Minister-Counselor Chen Zhi-Zhong from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

This program, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a new initiative for 2025. Under the program, the TaiwanICDF will collaborate with medical institutions in Taiwan at or above the regional level to offer one to three months of clinical training each year for medical professionals from allied nations. The program aims to help these professionals enhance their knowledge, skills, and experience. In 2025, the program will train a total of 33 medical professionals, with the first group being trained at Chimei Medical Center, Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Mackay Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital Hsinchu Branch, and Shuang Ho Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary-General Stephen J.H. Lee encouraged the participants to make the most of their training in Taiwan and adapt what they learn to their respective countries, thereby sharing valuable knowledge with their home nations to improve healthcare quality. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Minister-Counselor Chen Zhi-Zhong expressed hope that the program would enable Taiwan to share its medical expertise with diplomatic allies, while strengthening bilateral cooperation. He also encouraged the participants to experience Taiwan’s diverse culture and vibrant local life, believing that this unique experience in Taiwan would leave lasting memories.

The TaiwanICDF’s public health and medical programs have long served as a platform for international development cooperation. The TaiwanICDF is committed to strengthening cooperation with both public and private sectors in Taiwan, focusing on key areas such as maternal and child health, chronic disease prevention, health information management systems, and public health emergency response. These efforts aim to assist partner countries in strengthening their healthcare and sanitation systems. Through professional collaboration and resource integration, Taiwan’s foreign aid programs continue to grow and make a meaningful impact.
