Agricultural Training Brings Indonesian Inmates Valuable Skills
The Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Indonesia is breaking new ground through an agricultural training initiative. Since March 2025, the TTM has been providing agricultural training at Karawang Prison to support the Indonesian government's efforts in boosting local agriculture, while facilitating inmate reintegration in West Java. This initiative marks the first time in nearly five decades of local experience that the TTM has entered a correctional facility to deliver vocational training.
TTM in Indonesia head Dennis Kao stated that the training program adopts a market-oriented production approach, selecting crops aligned with local consumer preferences—such as eggplants and leafy vegetables—and applying standardized cultivation techniques and management models. The TTM is also collaborating closely with the prison administration and local agricultural agencies to plan for three key areas: post-harvest product marketing, technical skills upgrading, and resource integration. The long-term goal is to establish a sustainable small-scale production system that empowers inmates with practical skills and injects new momentum into the region’s agricultural development.
To showcase the program’s early outcomes, Karawang Prison held a “Harvest Day” on March 24, inviting Karawang Deputy Regent H. Maslani to join inmates in harvesting fresh vegetables. The Deputy Regent commended the TaiwanICDF team for introducing structured agricultural practices and a market-driven production model, expressing hope that more inmates would gain self-reliance skills and successfully reintegrate into society.
TaiwanICDF Deputy Secretary-General Peifen Hsieh said the project reflects Taiwan’s ongoing commitment to inclusive social development and agricultural cooperation with partner countries. As an innovative extension of Taiwan’s international cooperation experience, the initiative demonstrates the potential of vocational agriculture to foster resilience and transformation. Looking ahead, the TaiwanICDF will continue strengthening ties with Indonesian stakeholders to expand the depth and reach of its technical assistance efforts, enabling more communities to achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable growth.
