Partnering to create a better life for CKD patients in Nicaragua

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) and the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua have cooperated the Project for Strengthening Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention and Control System in Nicaragua in 2019. The TaiwanICDF Secretary General Amb. Timothy T. Y. Hsiang presented a plaque to FEMH as a symbol of the collaboration on June 20th. The project will assist Nicaragua to strengthen the prevention and control system of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the country by sharing Taiwan’s experience in CKD prevention and control.

Chronic kidney disease is the leading cause of disease burden in Nicaragua, where the mortality rate is the fourth highest among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean region. TaiwanICDF has a successful experience of working with FEMH on the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize. For this reason, this project will focus on early diagnosis, clinical treatment and raising community awareness of self-management, to assist Nicaragua to strengthen its capabilities in the prevention and treatment of CKD.

TaiwanICDF dispatched a project manager to Nicaragua to implement and monitor the project with the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua this March. FEMH will conduct health care personnel training in Taiwan, as well as dispatch Taiwanese consultants to perform on-site follow-up assessment.

TaiwanICDF has long served as a platform for international cooperation and actively cooperated with the public and private sectors on various topics, including maternal and infant health care, chronic disease prevention, and health information and management system. TaiwanICDF will continue to use the professional resources from Taiwan’s medical institutions to plan and implement public health and medicine projects in our partner countries, thereby assisting them to strengthen their medical care and public health system.
