TaiwanICDF holds forum in Belize to share CKD prevention and control experience with regional partners
The Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize, jointly implemented by Ministry of Health (MoH) of Belize, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) will hold the Taiwan-Belize Forum on Chronic Kidney Disease and Health in Belize City on January 24 and 25, 2019. The achievements of the Project since its initiation three years ago will be presented in the forum and partners of the prevention and control of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) in Central America and the Caribbean region are invited to the forum, enhancing experience sharing in the region.
The forum will have four themes: the global burden of CKD, health education for CKD, trends of medical care for CKD and dialysis patients and case management of CKD. The TaiwanICDF invites Dr. Shang-Jyh Hwang, Chairman of Committee of CKD Prevention, Council of Executive Board, Taiwan Society of Nephrology, to present Taiwan’s experience and strategies in CKD prevention and control. Also, Dr. Yen-Ling Chiu from the Nephrology Division of FEMH will present Taiwan’s experience in CKD patient care and management as well as FEMH’s strategies on training healthcare personnel from Belize. Furthermore, representatives from St. Kitts and Nevis, Nicaragua and Honduras will share CKD prevention and control experience from their own countries. In addition, representatives from the MOH of Belize and beneficiary medical personnel of the Project will also share the changes brought by the Project in the past three years.
Since February 2016, the Project has significantly improved the capacity of healthcare personnel for CKD related medical care, health education and released data on the prevalence of CKD in Belize for the first time on record through epidemiological study. Furthermore, the Project has enhanced the Belize Health Information System (BHIS), leading to better tracking and management of CKD patients and high-risk groups.
