International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) cooperate with Ministry of Health (MoH) of Belize to obtain preliminary results on the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the distribution of related risk factors in Belize for the first time in August, 2018. These data provide scientific evidence to MoH for CKD prevention and control policy-making.

The Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize (hereinafter referred to as the Renal Failure Project), supported by the TaiwanICDF and FEMH, in partnership with MoH and Statistical Institute in Belize (SIB) jointly carried out a national survey for risk factors of CKD countrywide from August 7 to mid-December, 2017. A total of 10,343 people were interviewed, from which7,506 participants also provided a blood and urine sample. With guidance from FEMH consultant on data analysis, the Government of Belize has released the preliminary findings on September 3 this year. The findings indicate that 13.9 percent of Belizeans between ages 20-55 years have stage 3 to stage 5 CKD, and the female population has a higher prevalence (15 percent) than the male population (12.5 percent). Other significant risk factors include district (Orange Walk and Corozal), ethnicity (Mestizo/Hispanic), age, and specific conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity.

The Renal Failure Project will deliver an epidemiology report on CKD to the Government of Belize next January with more detailed analysis of the distribution of CKD related risk factors. The report can provide evidence-based guidance for MoH to reduce disease burden and the negative socio-economic impacts of CKD.
