Using environmentally friendly technologies, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) Technical Mission in Nauru assisted the country to produce eggs and vegetables, bringing better quality ingredients to school lunches in Nauru. According to World Health Organization, people in South Pacific countries are currently facing problems of obesity, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

One of the reasons is their unhealthy diet. The major sources of protein in the Nauruan diet are fish and canned food, with little poultry meat and vegetables. High rates of chronic diseases such as obesity (58.1 percent), diabetes (22.7 percent) and hypertension (17.2 percent) have resulted in increasing annual health expenditure for the government, and will inevitably affect the future development of the country.

Eggs are an important source of nutrition for teenagers, and students at this stage need large amounts of protein. However, the shortage of land and natural resources in Nauru, an island country, has restricted the availability and production of feed grain and hampered the development of farming techniques, resulting in a high price for eggs. Therefore, the TaiwanICDF and the Government of Nauru cooperated to implement the Egg Production Project. By introducing techniques and feeding methods for laying hens, we can regularly provide eggs for school lunches, which enable pupils to obtain essential nutrients for their growth. In addition, in combination with the Vegetable Production and Nutrition Enhancement Project, the Taiwan Technical Mission not only expanded the scale of vegetable production, but also promoted nutrition knowledge through a series of educational and student group activities. These projects will effectively raise awareness of healthy eating habits among local residents and reduce the rate of NCDs in Nauru.
