Taiwan Launches New Technical Cooperation Projects in Central America
The TaiwanICDF has recently commenced technical cooperation projects with three of its partner countries in Central America. These projects include the “Healthy Avocado Seedling Reproduction Project” in Honduras, the “Rice Seed Research, Development and Production Extension Project” in Nicaragua, and the “Institutional Enforcement Project for Agribusiness” in Guatemala. Accordingly, three agreements have been signed by His Excellency, Ko Yun Liang, the Ambassador to Honduras, His Excellency, Chung Ze Min, the Ambassador to Nicaragua, and His Excellency, Lai Chien Chung, the Ambassador to Guatemala, respectively, on behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the 15th and 27th of October of this year (2015).
With regard to technical cooperation, the agricultural expertise and abilities provided by the Taiwanese Government have been greatly acknowledged by our partner countries in Central America. Honduras’ “Healthy Avocado Seedling Production Project” will use Taiwan’s vast experience in nursery management to aid Honduras in obtaining the best technique for reproducing healthy seedlings, as well as in developing nursery management skills. The goals of these activities are to improve production technology, support renovating agricultural infrastructures, and increase income generation, thus ensuring that the Honduran Government can provide sufficient avocado seedlings to its farmers throughout the whole year.
Regarding Nicaragua’s “Rice Seed Research, Development and Production Extension Project”, Taiwan’s achievements in rice variety trials and production techniques shall be used to provide regular workshops with the goal of aiding small and medium-sized Nicaraguan rice production farmers in overcoming production difficulties. These workshops will include the crucial role of quality rice varieties and rational fertilization knowledge. This project also aims to facilitate the Nicaraguan Government’s policy implementation related to food security.
Finally, in order to meet the market demand of agriculture products, the Guatemalan Government will reference the success of agribusiness development in Taiwan and cooperate with TaiwanICDF to create the “Institutional Enforcement Project for Agribusiness”. Based on the development model of Taiwan’s agribusiness, this project corresponds with relevant policy goals and supports Guatemala in the integration of its industry-academia-government resources with the goal of improving the advisory capabilities of the Ministry of Agriculture with regard to agri-business. By doing so, this program aims to boost rural economic development and decrease the Guatemala’s impoverished population.
