TaiwanICDF Supports Pacific Mini Games with Fresh Produce, Sparking Agri-Food Buzz in Athletes' Village
The 12th Pacific Mini Games are being held in Palau from June 29 to July 9, 2025. In support of the Games’ promotion of healthy and sustainable diets, the Taiwan Technical Mission in Palau is providing fresh fruits and vegetables from its demonstration farm to the athletes’ village cafeteria. The mission has also set up an on-site booth to display locally grown fruit and vegetables, and provide nutrition education. The initiative will enable athletes from 24 participating countries to enjoy diverse, nutritious meals and embrace the spirit behind the TTM’s slogan for the program, “Eat local, fuel up, and go for the win.”
At the booth, the TTM displayed produce it helped grow, including dragon fruit, guava, cucumber, and cabbage, which quickly became a conversation starter among athletes. A wrestler from Team Palau pointed to the pineapples, saying they were a favorite of the team’s. Athletes from Kiribati showed great interest in the cabbage, while competitors from Guam were curious about the star fruit, eagerly asking about its name and nutritional value. Two weightlifters from Tuvalu, currently studying at the National Taiwan University of Sport, shared a video of their visit to the TTM’s demonstration farm in Tuvalu. They expressed appreciation for the fresh produce they enjoyed during their stay in Palau. TaiwanICDF horticulture specialist Chia-Ling Ho and nutritionist Kelvin Chen also invited athletes to visit the demonstration farm in Palau during their downtime, to learn more about the development of the local agricultural industry, and the achievements of Taiwan-Palau technical cooperation.
Deputy Secretary General of the TaiwanICDF, Ms. Pei-Fen Hsieh, noted that due to limited arable land and challenging soil conditions, South Pacific island countries often face low fruit and vegetable production, contributing to a high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). To address this issue, the TaiwanICDF has implemented fruit and vegetable production and nutrition enhancement projects in Palau, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Fiji, promoting a resilient, healthy, and sustainable agricultural development model. Ms. Hsieh further emphasized that by donating produce and promoting nutrition education during the Pacific Mini Games, the TaiwanICDF is showcasing the outcomes of Taiwan’s agricultural cooperation in the Pacific to all 24 participating countries. It also brings Palau's agricultural products to the regional stage, highlighting the win-win results of Taiwan-Palau collaboration.
The Pacific Mini Games, a sister event to the Pacific Games, have been held every four years since 1981 to foster sports exchanges among Pacific Island nations. Although smaller in scale than the main Pacific Games, they consistently attract participation from across the region, with competitions spanning track and field, weightlifting, wrestling, sailing, and more. As the host of this year’s Games, Taiwan’s ally Palau is not only demonstrating its organizational capacity and vibrant local culture, but also promoting healthy eating and sustainability—making the Games an ideal platform for sports diplomacy and public engagement.
