Servicemen dispatched to friendly countries by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) in October last year came back to Taiwan in August this year. After 10 months of service overseas, these young men return not only with memories of working and living with the local people, but also their own experience and understanding of international development assistance work. The performance of Chien-Hao Huang, Ming-Hsun Kuo and Shao-Wei Ho, servicemen of the 16th group, was outstanding. All three agreed that this experience will be helpful for their careers in the future.

With a background in information and communicaitons technonology, Chien-Hao Huang and Ming-Hsun Kuo were dispatched to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for their service. They found out that administrative tasks in government departments were still paper-based and some expensive items such as printers were damaged due to long-term disuse. In order to improve the management efficiency and effectiveness of the government, the two servicemen combined their expertise and the limited resources they had to establish an online form and property management system for administrative work such as managing employees’ attendance and related equipment.

Chien-Hao Huang believes that participating in Taiwan Youth Overseas Service has allowed him to better understand the diplomatic situation of Taiwan and the necessity to implement these cooperation projects. Ming-Hsun Kuo was very honored that the program he designed was tested and launched online and thanked theTaiwanICDF for providing him with this experience through Taiwan Youth Overseas Service.

Shao-Wei Ho, a draftee with expertise in forestry, was dispatched to St. Kitts and Nevis for his service. He combined the results of the soil tests from TaiwanICDF project and climate information to produce the country’s first crop map, which can assist the farmers in choosing crops that are suitable for their land. He believes that he was very fortunate to be able to contribute his expertise. Moreover, he not only expanded his perspective but also greatly improved his language skills during his service period. These experiences will greatly benefit him in his career and life.
