The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) participated in the 48th International Trade Fair 2016 held by Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority (SIPA) in Manzini, the largest business city in Swaziland, from August 26 to September 5. In the exhibition, the TaiwanICDF displayed the achievements of five projects that are being carried out with different ministries of the Swazi government. In particular, the techniques of plant tissue culture for seed potato propagation and virus inspection of the Seed Potato Production Project, and the newly introduced fruit tree varieties such as Taiwan’s guava and pitaya of the Fruit Tree Production and Marketing Project, were highly acclaimed by the crowds at the annual fair. Around 50 professional farmers on site registered for cultivation assistance to improve their techniques through these two projects.

Implemented in 2013, the Seed Potato Production Project has to date successfully established seed potato virus detection techniques and a seed potato propagation and certification system, gradually helping to narrow the gap between the seed potato inspection and certification systems of Swaziland and South African countries. From this year, seed potato will be supplied to Swazi farmers to assist Swaziland break free from the constraints of a limited supply of seed potato from South Africa.

In addition, propagation of papaya, banana, pitaya and guava fruit tree seedlings as part of the Fruit Tree Production and Marketing Project was initiated this year, with plans to begin large-scale production in October. In particular, fruit distributors in southern Africa have started to express their willingness to market and export pitaya and guava fruits from farmers who have received project counseling, as these fruits are rare in this region. These fruits introduced by the TaiwanICDF project are growing in popularity and will surely bring in more market opportunities in the future.
