TaiwanICDF assists to improve technicians’ capacity in intestinal parasite screening in São Tomé and Príncipe
Since March 28, 2016, the project team of Control and Prevention Project for Intestinal Parasites in São Tomé and Príncipe has successively organized nationwide training courses for technicians on parasite screening. In all, 31 technicians have received training and seen a marked improvement in their screening skills.
Laboratory technicians in São Tomé and Príncipe are generally able to recognize only four intestinal parasites and healthcare personnel lack knowledge in the prevention and control of parasitic infections and their causes. In view of this, the training course combines not only the epidemiology, life cycle, identification of intestinal worms and parasite eggs, and microscopy skills, but also the clinical symptoms, prevention and treatment methods of intestinal parasite infections. Furthermore, the merthiolate – iodine – formaldehyde concentration method (MIF method) adopted by the Centers for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Republic of China (Taiwan), has been introduced to improve the identification of parasites.
With assistance from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the project was signed jointly by the TaiwanICDF and the Ministry of Health, São Tomé and Príncipe, at the end of 2015. In addition to health promotion, the project also emphasizes capacity building for healthcare personnel, including laboratory technicians, physicians, nurses, health promoters, and statisticians, and will assist in the establishment of an case management system and patient database. These efforts will bring new elements and energy to intestinal parasite prevention in the country and achieve the project outcome of prevention and control of intestinal parasites.
