To build capacity in the prevention and control of parasitic diseases in São Tomé and Príncipe, a partner country of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the government of São Tomé and Príncipe are jointly implementing the Control and Prevention Program for Intestinal Parasites, which aims to improve public health in São Tomé and Príncipe through health promotion activities, capacity building, and the establishment of a reporting system.

Intestinal parasites are common agents of infectious disease in children in São Tomé and Príncipe, affecting nearly 80% of elementary students. The pathogenic species are an important cause of morbidity and can potentially result in death to its hosts. To address this issue, the TaiwanICDF is cooperating with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders from São Tomé and Príncipe on the Control and Prevention Program for Intestinal Parasites. The program emphasizes the importance of capacity building for health technicians, accuracy rate of health screenings and adequate provision of medicine in order to reduce the prevalence rate among students. The project will also establish a reporting system and provide a corresponding strategy on health education to enable the government of São Tomé and Príncipe to have better control of parasitic infection cases.

In addition, the non- governmental organization Saude Para Todos (SPT)from Portugal has an ongoing parasite prevention and control project involving health promotion activities and the provision of medication to children in São Tomé and Príncipe. This program expects to establish a partnership with the organization whereby children having received medication from SPT will be sampled and screened, and those who are still infected with intestinal parasites will receive further medication. This combined approach will enhance the effects and benefits of the program in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Throughout the years, the TaiwanICDF has actively responded to the needs of its partner countries to strengthen their health care and health systems by providing assistance in public health and medicine with a focus on a number of specialized fields: maternal and infant health care; the prevention of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases; the prevention of chronic diseases; and the expansion of health information systems.
