TaiwanICDF Helps Post-quake Nepal on the Road to Recovery
In December 2015, the TaiwanICDF launched two humanitarian assistance projects in Nepal – Gorkha Food Security and Livelihoods Support Program, and the Assisting the Recovery of Nepal Earthquake Affected Health Posts Project – to help with post-quake recovery in terms of agriculture and health in Nepal.
Nepal was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2015, which caused US$100 million in agricultural loss, including the damage of 130,000 tons of food and stored crops as well as loss of livestock, and agricultural implements. Gorkha is one of the districts which took the most severe hit from the earthquake. The economic condition in most of the villages in Gorkha had been poor prior to the temblor, and the earthquake has further caused damage to many households’ crops and has compromised their ability to farm. To address the food security and livelihood needs of the most vulnerable earthquake-affected households in the Gorkha district, the TaiwanICDF cooperates with CARE Nepal on the “Gorkha Food Security and Livelihoods Support Program,” to assist at least 850 disaster affected households in recovering their livelihoods and establishing coping mechanisms to meet their food security.
Many health facilities were damaged or destroyed as a result of the earthquake, affecting the functionality and capacity of the health system to respond to the needs of those impacted by the disaster. The two districts, Sindhupalchowk and Gorkha, have 149 health facilities in total; however, 131 of them have been either completely or partially damaged by the earthquakes. Therefore, the TaiwanICDF cooperates with World Vision International Nepal on the “Assisting the Recovery of Nepal Earthquake Affected Health Posts Project” to restore 5 health posts in earthquake-affected communities so that they can provide the quality health services for the population in those communities.
The TaiwanICDF will dispatch a short-term horticulture expert and a short-term technical engineer volunteer to assist in these two projects. In addition to helping with the project execution, it is hoped that their involvement will promote the visibility of Taiwan in Nepal as a humanitarian aid provider and strengthen the bilateral interaction with CARE Nepal and World Vision International Nepal.
