Ready to Serve! Taiwan Youth Overseas Service Draftees to Join Foreign Aid Projects

The TaiwanICDF will hold the closing ceremony for the 15th training program for the Taiwan Youth Overseas Service at Mellow Fields Hotel, Taipei, on October 23. Deputy Foreign Minister Simon Shen-Yeaw Ko will preside over and speak at the ceremony before symbolically handing over the service’s flag to graduating draftees. Some 77 servicemen specializing in fields such as agriculture, horticulture, public health and medicine, languages, economics, information engineering and management will then be dispatched to join foreign aid projects in 20 countries from November.

The 15th group of servicemen has been in training for about six weeks, since mid-September, acquiring a range of skills designed to prepare them for overseas service through courses covering subjects such as basic foreign languages, daily living skills, cultural adaptation and self defense.

The TaiwanICDF also invited a number of former servicemen who have gone on to become successful in their subsequent careers to serve as counselors, sharing their experiences of overseas life and helping the draftees to understand the ideas and attitudes they are likely to encounter in their destination countries.

The Taiwan Youth Overseas Service has served as an important pool of talent since its inception, with more than 90 former servicemen going on to serve as technicians on foreign aid projects or rejoining the TaiwanICDF.
