Working alongside other students as part of Team IMPCT, two TaiwanICDF scholarship recipients, Juan Diego Prudot (Honduras) and Andres Escobar (El Salvador), have beated more than 20,000 other entries to win the 2015 Hult Prize, bringing home US$1,000,000 to establish PlayCare centers, an innovative and sustainable start-up they envisioned as part of the competition.

The Team IMPCT initiative built a groundbreaking global micro-equity platform, enabling investors to contribute toward early childhood education in less economically developed parts of the world. Having since established its first PlayCare in Antiguo Cuscatlán, El Salvador, with the support of both the Salvadoran American Humanitarian Foundation and Fundacion Kriete, the team plans to establish 500 schools in Latin America, as well as extend the project to remote areas of Taiwan, Cambodia and the Philippines in the future.

The TaiwanICDF initiated its International Higher Education Scholarship Program in 1998. The program brings talented young citizens to Taiwan to pursue their higher education through course materials and learning objectives designed to address key development issues, presently offering scholarships for 34 courses via cooperation with 21 Taiwanese universities. From 1998 to 2015, nearly 1,536 students from 58 countries received scholarships, with the majority of graduates going on to successful careers, particularly in roles as key government officers.

The TaiwanICDF has long encouraged its scholarship students to learn from Taiwan’s unique experience of entrepreneurship and innovation, in the hope that graduates will put what they have learned into practice and contribute toward socio-economic development in their home countries. Both of the TaiwanICDF’s 2015 Hult Prize-winning students attend National Chengchi University’s IMBA program, which the TaiwanICDF supports in order to assist Taiwan’s partner countries to satisfy an increasing demand for highly qualified individuals in the field of business and management.

The Hult Prize: The Hult Prize Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to launching the world’s next wave of social entrepreneurs by issuing an annual challenge to solve the planet’s biggest challenges with innovative ideas. The prize is a partnership between Hult International Business School and the Clinton Global Initiative. Each year, teams from elite business schools across the globe participate in the world’s largest student competition.
