Project Name:WASH for Primary Schools in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda

Project status:Projects in Operation

Cooperating Country:Africa, Uganda

Project Description:

Due to the continued influx of refugees from neighboring countries into Uganda, refugee settlements have become severely overcrowded, while international assistance funding remains critically insufficient. This situation has placed a substantial financial burden on the Ugandan government. Nine public primary schools in the Nakivale refugee settlement in southwestern Uganda are facing acute shortages of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. Existing latrines, water sources, and sanitation facilities are severely overburdened. In addition, the persistent stigma surrounding menstruation within the local community forces many adolescent girls to miss schoolor even drop outduring their menstrual periods. To address these challenges, the TaiwanICDF is collaborating with IsraAID to improve sanitation facilities and the overall health environment in the target primary schools within the project area, benefiting pupils, staff, and surrounding communities. The project includes the following components:

1. Access to WASH facilities in Nakivale government-aided primary schools increased.

2. School management systems for sustainable operation and maintenance of WASH facilities strengthened.

3. Pupils’ hygiene and sanitation knowledge and practices enhanced.

4. Pupils’ knowledge and practices in menstrual health management strengthened.

5. Access to menstrual hygiene materials in schools and the surrounding community increased.
