Project Name:WASH Recovery Program in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia)

Project status:Completed projects

Cooperating Country:Asia-Pacific, Indonesia

Project Description:

On September 28, 2018, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The disaster has caused severe damage on water supply systems; therefore, the affected households have confronted water supply crisis. In addition, the loss of houses also means the loss of toilets, which leads to open defecation and sanitation problem. The TaiwanICDF worked with Mercy Corps Indonesia on Central Sulawesi Earthquake WASH Support Program from February to October 2019 during the early recovery phase. To continue responding the WASH related needs of more earthquake-affected households in Sigi district, the two organizations decided to scale up and carry out the second phase project.
Overall, the project includes the following:
1. Construct/rehabilitate 10 communal water sources.
2. Construct/rehabilitate 88 communal latrines.
3. 4 villages have reduced open defecation.

Project Objectives:1000 households have access to communal clean water sources and sanitation facilities, and demonstrate improved behavior related to open defecation practices.

Executing Agency:Mercy Corps

Implementation Arrangement:The TaiwanICDF planned to dispatch at least one volunteer to Turkey to assist in the project implementation; however, it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mercy Corps implemented the proposed activities and liaised with local government units and stakeholders.
