Project Name:Rice Production Enhancement Project in South, Haiti

Project Description:

The project is to continue the achievements of the "National Rice Seed Production Enhancement Project in South, Haiti", with the intention to assist the food production, continue to produce seeds in South and stabilize the national rice production to ensure food security. Project implementation will include: 1. Promote the community seed bank system, guide regional seed banks to produce commercial seeds, to achieve the sufficiency of quality rice seeds for community farmers.; 2. Introduce the concept of agricultural enterprises, strengthen the operation function of farmers' organizations, support community seed banks to produce rice seeds, and provide regional agricultural services; 3. Build capacity of seed inspection technicians and establish the grading standards to improve regional seed quality; 4. Guide the operation of the multi-service center, seed purchasing and storage, and training technicians in the operation and maintenance of agricultural equipment to improve the ability of regional seed post-harvest process; 5. Assist in training to improve farmers' knowledge.

Project Objectives:

1. Establish a community seed bank system to produce seeds of M8 variety with an annual yield goal of 350 tons of quality rice seed and 1,050 tons of grain.

2. Guide 14 farmers’ organizations to operate multi-service center to support regional seed bank and offer agricultural services to the region.

3. Guide the community seed banks to analyze and control seed quality and training of 12 inspection technicians and 6 laboratory technicians.

4. Improve the planting technology, material technical support and seed production process of farmers. Training 240 farmers and organizing 2 field cultivation observation sessions.

5. Build and register the field geographic information map and cultivation information for a total of 200 hectares to facilitate the accessibility of real-time land data and promote the diversified application of smart agricultural information.

Current Progress:

To the end of December 2024, the following activities have been completed:

1. Completed harvest on 0.02 hectares and produced 96 kilograms of breeder seed for the first cropping season of 2024.

2. Completed harvest on 0.02 hectares and produced 102 kilograms of breeder seed for the second cropping season of 2024.

3. Completed harvest on 1 hectare and produced 5.4 tonnes of foundation seed for the first cropping season of 2024.

4. Completed harvest on 1 hectare and produced 4.5 tonnes of foundation seed for the second cropping season of 2024.

5. Completed harvest on 50 hectares and produced 191.33 tonnes of certified seed for the first cropping season of 2024.

6. Completed harvest on 50 hectares and produced 206.06 tonnes of certified seed for the second cropping season of 2024.

7. Completed harvest on 150 hectares and produced 540.07 tonnes of paddy rice for the first cropping season of 2024.

8. Completed harvest on 150 hectares and produced 524.16 tonnes of paddy rice for the second cropping season of 2024.

9. Guided 10 farmer associations, including on agricultural material procurement, material lending, rice milling quality inspection, and white rice sales.

10. Conducted 4 rice cultivation technique training sessions with a total of 240 participants, and conducted 2 field observation and study with a total of 120 participants.

11. Performed maintenance for irrigation facilities and dredged irrigation channels in 10 farmer organizations’ fields, covering 5,000 meters.

12. Coached 10 farmers’ association teams in agricultural operations, with a land preparation area of 200 hectares.

Projected Benefits:

Stabilize the rice seed production chain in the South province. At the end of the project, achieve an annual yield of quality seed of 350 tons and 1,050 tons of rice grain.
