Project Name:Poultry and Livestock Project

Project status:Projects in Operation

Cooperating Country:Palau, Asia-Pacific

Project Description:

This project collaborates with the Palau Bureau of Agriculture to enhance the diversity and production of livestock, aligning with the country’s critical food security policies. The plan is to build upon the existing achievements of the previous Animal Production Project (APP) by reconstructing animal housing and scaling up production to maximize the project’s impact.

For pigs, the project will continue purifying local pig breeds and gradually increase the breeding scale to produce 450 piglets annually, which will be promoted to farmers to create employment opportunities and boost their profits from pig farming.

For chickens, a commercial layer breeding model will be established to produce approximately 210,000 eggs annually, providing nutritious ingredients for school lunches. Additionally, the project will produce around 2,000 broilers each year, distributed across all states to enhance food security.

The project will also assist Palau in establishing a meat duck flock, investigating growth characteristics, and developing artificial breeding technology to increase the diversity of domestically produced animal protein.

The main components of this project include: 1. Pig and feed production and promotion; 2. Egg, broiler, and feed production and promotion; 3. Hygienic slaughter assistance; and 4. Duck production trials.

Region:Asia-Pacific

Implementation Start Date:2021-01-01

Implementation End Date:2025-12-31

Project Objectives:

Livestock:

1. Expand the construction of 2 pig houses and 1 wastewater treatment facility, capable of processing approximately 200 kg of solid manure and 4 metric tons of wastewater per day.

2. Produce a total of 1,750 quality piglets over 5 years to be promoted to farmers for raising.

3. Produce and distribute a total of 350 metric tons of pig feed to farmers over 5 years.

4. Hold 10 pig feeding and management training sessions, training a total of 6 skilled personnel.

5. Assist in the hygienic slaughter of 1,310 pigs and develop a slaughterhouse operation manual.

Poultry:

1. Expand the construction of 2 poultry houses.

2. Produce 10,000 broiler chicks over 5 years to be distributed to farmers. This includes supporting low-income families in 13 states of Palau by providing each with 24 broilers annually, reaching a total of 195 households over the first 3 years.

3. Establish a high-yield egg production model (Rhode Island Red), maintaining a flock of 800 layers to produce 832,000 eggs over 5 years.

4. Produce and distribute a total of 350 metric tons of poultry feed to farmers over 5 years.

5. Hold 10 training sessions on chicken feeding and management, training a total of 6 skilled personnel.

6. Assist in feed production and develop a feed mill operation manual.

7. Introduce and establish a meat duck breeding flock of 100, and conduct studies on growth performance, carcass quality, and reproductive efficiency, while developing artificial breeding techniques.

Executing Agency:

Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Palau, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment of the Republic of Palau

Current Progress:

By the end of December 2024, the key achievements of this project include:

Completion and official inauguration of new animal houses.

Continue to carry out the capacity building of Palauan personnel, including pig and chicken feeding and management, slaughterhouse, and feed plant operation and maintenance, etc.

Livestock progress:

1. Propagated 1,349 piglets.

2. Total production of pig feed reaching 401.94 metric tons.

3. Conducted 9 workshops on pig house management and provided on-site technical guidance.

4. Provided guidance for the sanitary slaughter of 962 pigs.

Poultry progress:

1. Conducted 9 seminars on chicken farming and slaughter training.

2. Total number of broiler chicks extended was 13,755.

3. Produced a total of 873,280 chicken eggs.

4. Total production of chicken feed reaching 459.25 metric tons.

5. Cultivated a total of 876 meat ducks.

Project Performance:

Local production of pork and eggs is projected to meet 14% and 15% of domestic demand, respectively.
