Project Name:Poultry Production and Promotion Project in the Marshall Islands

Project status:Projects in Operation

Cooperating Country:Asia-Pacific, Marshall Islands

Project Description:

The Marshall Islands lacks a domestic supply system for high-quality breeder chickens and day-old chicks, leaving the country heavily reliant on imports for its chicken meat and eggs. However, the importation of egg products is highly vulnerable to international supply chain disruptions, transportation costs, and avian diseases such as avian influenza. This has rendered the local egg supply chain extremely fragile, leading to persistent instability and frequent shortages, which further raises concerns over national food security.

To strengthen bilateral relations between Taiwan and the RMI. Anthony Muller, Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce of the RMI, approached Taiwan to propose this project. The initiative aims to leverage Taiwans technical expertise and experience in the egg-laying poultry industry to jointly develop the poultry farming sector on both the main island (Majuro) and the outer island (Kwajalein) of the RMI. By doing so, the project seeks to reduce the country's heavy reliance on imported eggs and achieve the sustainable goal of self-sufficiency with a stable production and supply chain.

The core components of the project include:

1.   Establishing a national high-quality layer chicken supply center and a sustainable small-scale poultry production system;

2.   Guiding and assisting poultry farmers in upgrading their farming technologies;

3.    Strengthening the breeding and management capabilities of partner agencies and local farmers.

Project No:TT-310-2026-028

Region:Asia-Pacific

Implementation Start Date:2026-01-01

Implementation End Date:2029-12-31

Project Objectives:

Starting with a pilot on Majuro Atoll, the project will expand to Kwajalein. The initial scale is set at 3,000 layer hens. The goal is to enhance young people’s nutrition and achieve the vision of "one egg per day" for every student.

Executing Agency:

  1. Ministry of Natural Resources & Commerce-Agriculture Division
  2. Ministry of Education, Sports and Training-Public School System (PSS)
  3. Taiwan Technical Mission in the RMI

Current Progress:

As of the end of March 2026, the project had completed the following key activities:

  • Constructed a simple chicken coop at Laura Farm; imported 250 Black-Feathered Taiwan Native Chicken hatching eggs from the Taiwan Technical Mission in Palau at the end of last October (2025), successfully hatching 119 chicks.

  • Currently rearing 52 roosters and 53 hens, which began laying eggs on March 11. A total of 258 eggs were produced in March, representing a laying rate of 22.7%.

  • Completed one set of farmer training manual.
