Project Name:Expansion of Agricultural Production and Promotion of Nutritional Balance Project (Tuvalu)

Project Description:
The project will assist Tuvalu to expand the production of local fruits and vegetables, promote cultivation techniques and promote nutrition and healthy eating concepts on each island to improve the health of all people in Tuvalu. The four tasks planned are: 1. Expand the cultivation area of the Hope Garden on Vaitupu Island to at least 3 hectares and provide guidance on fruit and vegetable cultivation techniques; also assist Motufoua High School in the demonstration of vegetable and fruit cultivation on its own farm, and provide relevant agricultural production internship courses and meals of fruits and vegetables for students. Stable supply of fruits and vegetables to islanders; 2. Strengthen the vegetable and fruit production capacity of the newly established half-acre farms on each outer island, and conduct capacity building training for the youth of the outer islands; 3. Provide guidance on the vegetable and fruit cultivation demonstration of the Happy Friendship Garden on the main island and the Wonderful Garden on the small outlying island of Funafala production to increase the variety and quantity of fruits and vegetables at the Happy Friendship Garden Market; 4. Conduct vegetable and fruit nutrition promotion and cooking activities to increase people’s willingness to eat fruits and vegetables.

Project Objectives:
By the end of the project, the "Individual Dietary Diversity Score" (IDDS) of students and teachers at the Motufoua campus will reach at least 4 points.

Current Progress:
To the end of June 2025, the following activities have been implemented:
1. Developed cultivation manuals for dragon fruit and sweet pepper, assisting farmers in promoting these crops.
2. Organized 2 training workshops, covering topics such as clean energy use in farming, vegetable and fruit variety introduction, and water-saving drip irrigation techniques suited to Tuvalu’s environment.
3. Established an online consultation group for outer island extension officers and Agriculture Department staff, providing advisory support and feedback for home garden guidance.
4. Promoted locally grown fruits and vegetables through regular farmers’ markets, achieving a cumulative sales volume of 20.02 metric tons.
5. Produced a total of 90.6 metric tons of compost for vegetable and fruit cultivation.
6.Produced 159,344 seedlings for use on production farms and for agricultural promotion.
7.Produced 26.54 metric tons of fruits and vegetables for public consumption, including school meal programs and community members.
8.Set up elevated or potted planting demonstration areas to address Tuvalu’s soil and environmental challenges.
9.Set up drip irrigation demonstration zones to address insufficient rainfall caused by climate change.
10.Conducted surveys on nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
11.Held 4 nutrition education and cooking demonstration sessions.
12.Held 3 food and agriculture education sessions.
