Project Name:Haiti Earthquake WASH Assistance to Affected Communities and Households
Project status:Completed projects
Cooperating Country:Caribbean, Haiti
Project Description:
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti’s southwest on the 14th of August, 2021, causing the death toll reached over 2,200, with more than 12,000 injured. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), at least 300,000 people are in need of safe drinking water, and around 500,000 need long-term humanitarian assistance to access water. Among the most earthquake-affected regions, over 7,000 houses (including household water storage and sanitation facilities), as well as many shelters, in the Grand’Anse Department were destroyed or damaged, and this has forced displaced people to shelter at assembly points, where lack basic WASH and Protection services. This project will enhance access to safe and clean water resources, and to hygiene information on waterborne diseases prevention for the earthquake-affected people across three communes, Beaumont, Pestel and Roseaux in Grand’Anse. Overall, the project includes the following:
1.Organization of 30 hygiene information and awareness raising and sensitization campaigns across target areas.
2.Distribution of 375 Hygiene Kits/ Product Vouchers to 375 households.
3.Rehabilitation of 375 household water storage and hands washing stations.
4.Installation and or rehabilitation of 3 community water treatment and distribution facilities (communal clean and safe water distribution systems).
5.Reactivating and strengthening 20 Water Management Committees.
6.Water Trucking to 20 community distribution / water points during rehabilitation.
