International Cooperation and Development Fund and Good Neighbors Taiwan work together to provide Psycho-Social Support to Ukraine Refugee Children in Romania

After the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian War, Romania has become one of the countries hosting a large number of Ukrainian refugees. Since the refugee aid providers in Romania mostly don’t have the background of psycho-social support (PSS), it’s a great challenge for them to properly respond to psychological needs of refugee children who have been traumatized by the war. Therefore, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has worked with Good Neighbors Taiwan (GNT) to implement the PSS Service enhancement project for Ukraine Refugee Children in Romania. This project launched on December 26, 2022 with a focus on enhancing PSS capacity of refugee aid providers in Suceava, Galați, and Constanța, where many Ukrainian refugees are acommodated.

There are over 7.89 million Ukrainian refugees who have fled to other countries since the war occurred, and Romania has accommodated over 100,000 refugees who are women and children mostly. Some research shows the learning ability and future personality of children who undergo wars or conflicts will be impacted tremendously. Considering most refugee aid providers in Romania don’t have the professional knowledge of PSS to respond to such needs, the TaiwanICDF, therefore, collaborates with GNT to conduct this project through GN Romania. The project will train 450 aid providers who work in local non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations, as well as Ukraine refugee women, to enhance their capacity of PSS so they can provide better assistance to Ukraine refugee children. It is estimated that 18,500 children will be benefited. Also, 24 Ukraine refugee women will be selected to become the PSS workers for GN Romania in order to support their livelihoods and improve their living conditions in Romania.

This project marks the first humanitarian collaboration between the TaiwanICDF and GNT. The TaiwanICDF will also dispatch volunteers to take part in project implementation. In addition to cultivating humanitarian assistance professionals, this way not only can assure local visibility of Taiwan but also can deepen participation on the ground and reinforce the image of Taiwan as a humanitarian aid provider.
