Project Name:Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Metabolic Chronic Diseases in St. Lucia

Project Description:

The project is expected to utilize Taiwan’s years of experience in metabolic chronic diseases management mechanisms to help improve the chronic disease prevention and control system in St. Lucia. Enhancing the self-management abilities of patients and high-risk groups with chronic diseases will help reduce the country’s medical and financial burdens. The project content includes: (1) Strengthen the promotion of related strategies for the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases; (2) Strengthen the capacity for metabolic chronic diseases prevention and control at medical institutions; (3) Enhance the self-management capacities of community residents for the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases.

Project Objectives:

The objectives of this project are:
1. Strengthen the promotion of related strategies for the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases.
A. Policy planners to visit Taiwan.
B. Provide a report on promotion strategy recommendations in accordance with existing metabolic chronic disease strategies and plans in the country.
C. Hold an international seminar on the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases.

2. Strengthen the capacity for metabolic chronic diseases prevention and control at medical institutions.
A. Strengthen the professional and case management capacities of the metabolic chronic disease team in medical institutions.
B. Assist at least 5 public medical institutions to strengthen the hardware equipment needed for the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases.

3. Enhance the self-management capacities of community residents for the prevention and control of metabolic chronic diseases.
A. Capacity building of community health education personnel.
B. Community health education promotion activities.
C. Improve people’s management of their own metabolic conditions.

Implementation Arrangement:

Members of the Project will provide technical assistance and assistance for capacity building.

Current Progress:

By the end of  Mar 2024, the following activities have been carried out:

  • Invited 3 policy planners from the Ministry of Health of St. Lucia to visit Taiwan.
  • Provided 5 healthcare personnel to attend the seed instructor training in Taiwan.
  • Conducted 1 community health education training for 22 healthcare personnel.
  • Held 1 physical exercise promotion activity; a total of 38 people participated; edited a health promotion film for St. Lucia Move.
  • Held 3 nutrition courses; a total of 231 people participated.
  • Developed 3 recipes exclusive for diabetic patients, and printed 1,350 copies. 
  • Held 3 health promotion events and used social media for promotion.
  • Disseminated 3,090 copies of health education materials on diabetes and hypertension topics.
  • Provided 17 health screening services and screened 848 people.
