Project Description:

With the objective of reducing the proportion of pork imports and promoting domestic production of quality meat in Honduras, and refer to the successful experience of the Swine Breeding Project implemented by Taiwan Technical Mission. The project would aim to solve the problem of the deteriorating quality of pig breeding stock available in the Porcine Reproduction Center of Comayagua (CRPC). Honduras hopes that, through the new project, it will be able to help the CRPC improve the reproductive performance of the breeding stock and administrative efficiency. This will stabilize the supply of high-quality breeding stock to the pig farmers in order to establish the foundations to expand the production of pork and to develop the pork industry in Honduras. The content of this project focuses on the following: (a) Establish pig breeding stock with good genetics and purebred quality; (b) Optimize the pig management model and its environmental conditions; and (c) Strengthen the capacity to manage and maintain the pig breeding stock.

Implementation Start Date:2018-10-11

Implementation End Date:2022-12-31

Project Objectives:

The project will be able to help the CRPC improve the reproductive performance of the breeding stock and administrative efficiency. Executing Agency:

Taiwan Technical Mission in Honduras / Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock – Directorate for Agriculture Science and Technology (SAG-DICTA) (Republic of Honduras)

Current Progress:

As of March 2022, the following activities have been completed:
1. The pig artificial insemination laboratory and three varieties of (including Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc) purebred pig frozen semen have been set up. Based on the current pig production record and appearance evaluation of the Comayagua Porcine Center in Honduras, elite purebred sows have been selected for the insemination and the improvement of the current breeds. Until now, 2,326 piglets have been produced.
2. Three species (Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc) of purebred pigs have been imported from the United States on October 29, 2019. Currently, 238 times of breeding sows have been bred, and 16 boars have completed the training of insemination.
3. The daily report of the pig farm, including the record of breeding, gestating and newborn piglets, and the report of pigs shipping, and the consuming report of the fodder, and so on has been established. The trained Honduras personnel would fill the above reports into the computer system and assist the introduction of a computerized management system of pigs to the Porcine Reproduction Center of Comayagua (CRPC).
4. Ten workshops of the technician training have been held. A total of 393 participants including Honduran government officials had attended the training courses. The lectures including the planning of pig farms, the prevention of swine diseases, the management of pig farms, the feed nutrition. In addition, 1,800 pig technical manuals have been printed and distributed to pig farmers in Honduras and to those who works at related units.
