Project Name: Farmers’ Organization Production and Marketing Enhancement Project in Honduras
Project Description: This project implemented by TaiwanICDF and DICTA aims to strengthen the capacities of farmers’ organizations with the objective of increasing the value of potato production and the value of the strawberry chain. Through improving access to quality seeds and technical assistance, farmers’ organizations could expand market access and further increase smallholder farmers’ income.

This project is considered as a continuation of previous Healthy Seed Potato Project which has successfully established national seed potato production system in Honduras. It is expected that promoting locally produced and good quality seeds could lower farmers’ production cost, increase yield and generate more income. In recent years, Honduras’s strawberry industry has suffered from diseases and pests, and production has been drastically reduced. Therefore, one of the project objectives is to control the quality of the strawberry mother plant and establish a strawberry breeding base to provide disease-free plants for producers, which could revive Honduras’s strawberry industry.

By responding to the main policies established in the National Strategy for Family Agriculture of Honduras 2017-2030, and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in food security, sustainable agriculture and women’s empowerment, the project prioritizes farmers’ organizations, especially for vulnerable groups such as women or indigenous people to link up with production chains in the agricultural sector and make a decent living

This project focuses on the following matters:(a)Improve the production and quality of agricultural products through disease-free seedling supply, technical assistance in enhancing production, access to microcredit and contract farming between producers and buyers;(b)Promote farmers organizations’ management and operation capacity by providing intensive and immediate guidance and training aiming at formally entering the markets; and (c)Support farmers’ organizations to increase profit margins by providing market information and raising the profile of farmers’ organizations via attending exhibitions and promotional activities.
