Lending and Investment

Project Name: Women and Youth Entrepreneurs and MSMEs Re-lending Project (Palau)
Project Description:

The lending volume of the banking sector in Palau only amounts to 16.5% of the nation's GDP, which is much lower than the Pacific island countries’ average of 47.6%. This is due to, despite the ample liquidity enjoyed by the commercial banks, most of the domestic savings are directed by the commercial banks to overseas investments with only a small portion being retained in Palau as a source of credit, limiting the access to finance of the private sector and thus hampering its grow.

This project provides long-term funds to strengthen the lending capacity of the National Development Bank of Palau (NDBP) to women and youth entrepreneurs, and micro, small and median enterprises (MSMEs) in Palau in order to support the nation’s inclusive economic development.

Project Objectives:

The project, drawing upon the critical role of the NDBP in providing private sector credit, promotes the increase of access to finance of the private sector, especially women, youth entrepreneurs, and MSMEs in Palau through the NDBP with an ultimate objective of boosting the ratio of private sector credit to GDP.

Executing Agency: National Development Bank of Palau (NDBP)
Implementation Arrangement:

The loan proceeds provided from the TaiwanICDF to the Government of Palau is on-lent to the NDBP to support the expansion of its lending operation in Palau. The major beneficiaries will be women, youth entrepreneurs and MSMEs.
