Technical Cooperation

Project Name: Dietary Diversity Extension Project in Nauru
Project Description: In the present project, we plan to strengthen Nauruan’s “Dietary Diversity” effectively by the way of holding either “Dietary and Nutrition extension” in community and public health centre or “Food and Agriculture education” in schools. By these activities, we will raise Nauruan citizens and local NCDs patients’ awareness of Dietary Diversity, also we will promote their knowledge to this topic. Furthermore, we will intensify the education of agricultural production, environment and diet to the students and teachers, and help them to build up the concept of balanced diet. Last but not least, providing various vegetables and great animal-source of protein are also important compartment of the project. We are aim to improve the “Diet and Nutrition Status” of Nauru.

There are four compartments in the project, including: 1. Dietary and Nutrition extension in community and public health centre. 2. Food and Agriculture education in schools for students and teachers. 3. Build up the basic concept of nutritional monitoring. 4. Build up a great source of production, such as vegetables, mushrooms and high-quality protein.

Project Objectives: The present project is going to provide agricultural products, design and hold nutritional extension activities, and build up monitoring system of nutritional status. We aim to descend the Prevalence of NCDs and improve the Diet and Nutritional status of Nauruan.

Current Progress: As of the end of July 2020, the key achievements of this project include:
1.Produced and supplied vegetables, eggs, and mushrooms for schools and communities. Produced 3,561 kg of vegetables; 133,225 eggs; and 486 kg of mushrooms in total.
2.Organized 8 nutrition and diversified diet courses with 182 participants; held 10 cooking classes with 189 participants in the local community; and hosted 5 visits and experiential activities at the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) Food and Agriculture Education Center, with a total of 198 teachers and students participating. Promoted the importance of a healthy diet as mentioned above.
3.Trained 2 balanced diet promoters to equip them with knowledge of vegetable nutrition and the skills and ability to independently make vegetable and nutritional dishes.
