Project Name: Strengthen Capacity for GIS metadata and Disaster Resilience Project in Nicaragua
Project Description: Due to its geographical location, geological characteristics and global climate change, Nicaragua is strongly affected by extreme natural and geographic disasters, it is one of the most vulnerable countries in Central America. The national system for disaster prevention becomes a critical indicator to improve disaster response capacity and reduce damage. The Nicaraguan government has established a basis for disaster prevention research and the application of scientific and technological tools to strengthen the disaster prevention and response system. So in 2018 they made the proposal for the project "Strengthening Capacities in Natural Hazards in Nicaragua." The main work items in the project include (1) Development of generation capabilities and management of metadata for geographic information, ( 2) Improve the disaster prevention system at the national level and (3) Strengthen the capacities of technicians in the field of risk management and disaster prevention.

Current Progress:

To the end of September 2020, the following activities have been completed:

  1. Completed 30 risk management and disaster response training classes .
  2. Take inventory of 2,000 maps  and develop the metadata format.
  3. Hold on one  training for science and technology disaster prevention and matadata tecnologly.
  4. Monitor land use in Rio San Juan.
  5. Completed GIS metadata standards and specifications.
