The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) has just released the eighth book in its ICD Book Series entitled "In a World of Harvest." The book, now available at bookstores throughout Taiwan, relates the personal and professional experiences of Taiwan Youth Overseas Servicemen serving in overseas technical missions. This book is a must read for anyone interested in development issues with a personal touch.

Editorial Review

"People's Diplomacy" and "Humanitarian Diplomacy" are two of Taiwan's most important directions in diplomatic strategy. These two directions should not only be urged but also expanded and promoted. Since the initiation of the Taiwan Youth Overseas Service, Taiwan has been sending servicemen to Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean every year. These young people serve using their specialties in the technical and medical missions with our diplomatic allies. For me, each serviceman is a shining example of the "Son of Taiwan" ideal: A person who works hard and overcomes hardships. The people of our diplomatic allies not only see Taiwan's spirit through these servicemen, but they are also affected by Taiwan's compassion for the international community.

Chen Shui-bian
President of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

Sometimes people have to experience pain and not having the things they have become accustomed to in life in order to appreciate the value of the things they have and what true happiness is all about. One of our servicemen has seen over 50 children crowded into 34 hospital beds. Many children had to sleep on the floors of the hospital. Some of our servicemen had to work outside in fields with temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius. Some of them have had to live in villages that had no electric fans or electricity; some servicemen even came down with malaria and suffered from high fevers and severe headaches. These experiences have made these young people realize that the best place in the world is nowhere but their homes and home country. I believe these life experiences have made them feel proud to be "Sons of Taiwan" and proud to perform the beneficial international work they have been doing.
