Department: Technical Cooperation
Project Name: Honduras Expanding Avocado Cultivation Project
Project Description: Avocado has high nutritional value and is also a main part of the daily food intake of Honduran families. Honduras has suitable sites and conditions for avocado plantation; however the quantity and quality of cultivated areas is not stable, forcing farmers to import avocados from other countries. Taiwan Technical Mission in Honduras and CEPUDO (Capacitación , Educación, Producción, Unificación, Desarrollo y Organización) agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding to support the Government of Honduras in the development of the avocado industry. With support in extension staffs from SAG-DICTA, TTM and CEPUDO will jointly implement the Honduras Expanding Avocado Cultivation Project, which will provide approximately 60 hectares (90 manzanas) of avocado production area to 180 families to increase household income and generate 540 job opportunities. The main objectives of the project are: (a) To increase production area of avocado to 60 hectares, establishing a simple irrigation system; (b) To promote cooperation of the private and public sectors in the production of seedlings to provide 22,320 healthy avocado seedlings for three years to meet the needs of the Honduran market; (c) To provide training courses (18 training sessions); (d) To conduct three field visits; (e) To train at least three extension technicians. Likewise, beneficiaries will be supported in the efficient use of land for the cultivation of red beans to increase their income before the avocado harvest. In addition, for greater ease, TaiwanICDF will send an expert to support the project's technicians. The facilities and resources needed in the project will be granted free of charge by CEPUDO, and DICTA will provide support in extension staff.
