Project Name: Honduras Expanding Avocado Seedling Production Project
Project Description: According to data from the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), in 2016 the amount of imported avocados was approximately 9,989.6 tons while national production was approximately 1,986 tons. This means that avocado imports represent 83,4 percent of local market demand and 8 out of 10 avocados are imported. In order to promote the avocado industry, the Government of Honduras launched a National Avocado Plan (2018-2022) in August 2018. The objective is to expand production area per year to 1,000 hectares (which means about 250,000 avocado seedlings to meet the annual demand). The goal is for the next four years is to cultivate at least four thousand hectares of avocados nationwide. Therefore, through this project, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s Directorate of Agricultural Science and Technology (Dirección de Ciencia y Tecnología Agropecuaria de la Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería, SAG-DICTA) aims to integrate resources of the public and private sectors and select 14 nurseries for the production of avocado seedlings. Three of the nurseries are located in three experimental stations (Intibucá, Comayagua and Ocotepeque) of SAG-DICTA; SAG-DICTA will replicate the experience of the Healthy Avocado Seedling Production Project and stabilize production of 105,000 avocado seedlings at these nurseries. The project will also assist the other 11 nurseries to improve production capacity of avocado seedlings; consultative meetings will be held periodically to integrate the necessary information on avocado seedlings nationwide. All this will serve for the further promotion of the avocado industry in the long term. The content of this project focuses on the following: (a) Establishing standardized operating procedures for nurseries, assisting nurseries located in Intibucá, Comayagua and Ocotepeque in the annual production of 105,000 avocado seedlings; and (b) Providing support to the 11 private nurseries in Honduras, introducing standardized operating procedures, as well as providing operative and diagnostic consulting with the objective of increasing the capacity of stable production of avocado seedlings in the private sector.
