FAO Calls on Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua to Share Experience

The Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua - a three-time recipient of the TaiwanICDF Outstanding Mission award - was a key participant in a seminar on rice cultivation on September 9, focusing on the theme "united against hunger." Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the event was coordinated with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and other government agencies, and received in-depth coverage from La Prensa newspaper.

The seminar was co-chaired by FAO Representative to Nicaragua, Dr. Gero Vaagt, and Mission Chief at the Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua, Francisco Wang. A total of 34 experts and specialists attended, including Nicaraguan Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Amanda Lorio, representatives from the Nicaraguan Association of Rice Growers, and technicians from the Nicaraguan office of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.

The work of the Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua has been well received by both the government and in the private sector. Various TaiwanICDF projects have boosted production of rice, red beans and other fruits and vegetables, while an ongoing hog-breeding program has also had notable success. These endeavors led the FAO to seek the participation of the TaiwanICDF in this latest seminar, with the ultimate aim of reducing poverty in Nicaragua by offering a multilateral forum for the exchange of experiences.

The seminar opened with discussion from Luis Mejia and Felipe Romero of the FAO, and was followed by a report by Fang Tsai-chui from the Taiwan Technical Mission on key steps toward improving the efficiency of rice production in Nicaragua. Mission Chief Francisco Wang went on to give a report on project management and planning, in which he explained how credit management can improve the sustainability of farming cooperatives. His talk also shared technical guidance on how to improve yields, and practical advice and experience on maximizing profit.

Closing the seminar, Vice Minister Lorio said that participants had gained knowledge and technical insight that would help to solve food shortages in Nicaragua. Members of the FAO similarly expressed a hope that direct cooperation with the Taiwan Technical Mission might put a stop to the persistent food crises that have hit the country throughout recent years.

Participants later visited the Taiwan-Nicaragua Experimental Rice Center to see, first-hand, Taiwan's ongoing contributions to the development of the agricultural sector in Nicaragua. The center offers assistance to Nicaraguan farming cooperatives on a range of technical issues, field management, rice production and marketing.
