TaiwanICDF Launches Diabetes Project in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Diabetes, implemented by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) together with MacKay Memorial Hospital and the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was officially launched in February this year. This is the first of TaiwanICDF cooperative projects that targets diabetes and represents an important milestone.

The agreement was signed by Hon. Dr. David Tawei Lee, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of China (Taiwan) and Hon. Sir Louis Straker, SVG’s Deputy Prime Minister on February 1, 2018. Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Luke Browne, Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment noted that diabetes is the third leading cause of death in 2016 in SVG, and expressed his special thanks to Taiwan, the TaiwanICDF and MacKay Memorial Hospital for initiating this project.

The three-year project aims to help SVG strengthen its diabetes management system by providing assistance to health facilities in planning effective integrated care strategies and practices on the prevention and control of the disease, as well as by raising community and public awareness on diabetes self-care.

Throughout the years, the TaiwanICDF has proactively responded to the needs of partner countries. In cooperation with hospitals and medical institutions in Taiwan, the TaiwanICDF focuses on a number of specialized fields, including maternal and infant health care, chronic and communicable diseases, and health information systems to assist partner countries improve their health care systems.
