Project Name: Gorkha Food Security and Livelihoods Enhancement Program(Nepal)
Project Description: Disastrous earthquakes struck Nepal in April and May, 2015, which have had a massive impact on the livelihoods and food security of affected communities where agriculture and livestock are the main source of livelihoods. To respond the post-disaster recovery, the TaiwanICDF worked with CARE Nepal on Gorkha Food Security and Livelihoods Support Program from December 2015 to November 2016. To continue assisting the earthquake-affected households in Gorkha, this project was launched to further enhance their food Security and livelihoods.
Overall, this project will:
1. Increase food security from sustainable agro-based livelihoods through capacity building of poor, vulnerable and socially excluded (PVSE) farmers and relevant local institutions;
2. Enhance commercialization in agriculture in the earthquake affected communities, particularly PVSE, through capacity development, increased engagement in value chain, and better access to markets;
3. Enhance entrepreneurship in the earthquake affected communities, particularly PVSE through capacity development and access to finance and market.

Project Objectives: 1,800 Earthquake affected households’ have enhanced food security and livelihood by the end of projects
Executing Agency: CARE Nepal
Implementation Arrangement: The TaiwanICDF provides a US$500,000 grant, as well as dispatches a short-term horticulture expert and a volunteer to assist in the implementation of the project; CARE Nepal provides technical and management oversight, assists in reviewing the project proposal and producing reports and implements the proposed activities, liaises with local government offices and local NGO.
Current Progress: To the end of Aug 2017, the following activities have been completed:
1.Organized co-ordination meetings with local government and district level stakeholders, and participated in a day celebration (Rice Day).
2.30 training sessions on home garden concepts were held for a total of 908 individuals.
3.908 sets of diversity kits for home gardens were distributed.
4.56 beneficiaries were supported in shed improvement for composting.
5.17 irrigation structures have been constructed.
6.600 households from six VDCs participated in the Livelihood Improvement Plan (LIP) preparation.
7.619 individuals were trained in semi-commercial vegetable production.
8. 619 households have been assisted (vegetable and livestock production included) with start-up support.
9. 155 participants from cooperatives of 4 VDCs were trained in participatory governance assessment, and 40 members from the cooperatives in Gankhu VDC were trained in registration process facilitating, cooperative management, and financial management.
10.130 beneficiaries were given business awareness training, and received start up support.
11.A short-term horticulture expert and a volunteer have been dispatched.
