Project Name: Common Bean Research, Development and Production Extension Project in Nicaragua
Project Description: The purpose of this project is to enhance the capacity of research, development and production extension of the common bean. Two districts were selected as project targets to encourage local farmers in producing and selling bean seeds. It is difficult for smallscale farmers to obtain improved bean seeds because they live in remote areas. Therefore, the project plans to establish a Bean seed breeding plot (or seed bank) in townships of farmer groups to provide seeds directly to farmers. This project will assist and train the members of the seed bank to produce bean seeds and implement simple seed inspection methods. Thus, smallscale farmers will be able to keep their improved bean seeds and provide them to other farmers who live in nearby communities. As well, the project includes plans to build an irrigation system in the INTA’s experimental farm, La Compañía, to ensure breeding, purification and reproduction of different varieties. We expect to improve local varieties and develop new varieties suited to the climate change. The project content includes: 1. Enhance the capacity of common bean research; 2. Promote bean seeds and build the capacity of INTA technicians.

2.Taiwan Technical Mission in the Republic of Nicaragua
Current Progress: To the end of March 2021, the following activities have been completed:
1.Completed five bean variety test and analyzed reports.
2.Established 210 Seed banks, and it is estimated to increase 3.02% seed certificated using rate.
3.Held capacity building training courses to Seed banks on cultivation technologies, including the use organic materials and post-harvesting for farmers. Some new varieties and cultivation technologies were introduced to farmers in field demonstrations.
4.All training courses for technicians were completed. In addition, reports explaining the results of each course were prepared.
5.To increase 46% average production of Seed Banks.
