Project Name: Bamboo Cultivation and Handicraft Production Efficiency Enhancement Project in Nicaragua
Project Description: This project will introduce bamboo varieties of high commercial value for the INTA to establish a bamboo seed bank. Seeds will be promoted to businesses to increase the area of commercial bamboo plantations, and technicians and businesses will be trained in bamboo crop management. The project will introduce bamboo processing equipment and machinery to increase production efficiency, thereby assisting the government of Nicaragua to promote the bamboo industry and its capacity to provide technical guidance (including small business crafts), adding value to bamboo products and raising the value of the bamboo industry.

Project Objectives: Improve the production efficiency of bamboo crafts industry in Nicaragua; increase the average income by 50%.

Current Progress: To the end of  March 2018, the following activities have been completed:
  1. 5,000 bamboo plants were imported and acclimatized. 
  2. Held one internal training session on nursery management for nursery staffs,two seed instructor training sessions and one promotion meeting for 94 technicians and farmer.
  3. Promoted 49 farmers and five experimental centers to plant 49 hectares of bamboo.
  4. Completed manual on bamboo cultivation guidelines and survey report on A bamboo species in Nicaragua.
  5. Completed ceremonyof Bamboo Promotion and Design Center.
  6. Held six bamboo handicraft training courses for 185 beneficiary craftsmen in a total of 48 days.
  7. Held an inauguration ceremonyof Bamboo Promotion and Design Center and participated in National Bamboo Crafts Fair in August, which recorded a total of 15000 visitors.

Project Performance: 1. Assist Nicaragua with bamboo cultivation:
(1)Establish a bamboo seedling nursery.
(2)Establish300 hectares of commercial bamboo plantations.
(3)Introduce and cultivate of three commercial use varieties for a total of 15,000 plants
2. Assist MEFCCA with various training courses in capacity building of being seed teacher. Develop a bamboo crafts manual and a catalog of bamboo handicraft products.
(1)Hold two professional training workshops on bamboo cultivation, training a total of 30 technicians. Organize four basic workshops for a total of 80 participants.
(2)Provide two courses on basic bamboo manufacturing techniques for a total of 30 participants.
(3)Provide two courses on entrepreneurship for a total of 60 participants.
3. Introduce the machinery and hand tools for producing bamboo furniture and fabrics; provide guidance to eight businesses to become benchmark manufacturers, and assist them in developing 13 innovative products.
4. Research and analyze the bamboo industry in Nicaragua:
(1)Produce a technical guide on bamboo cultivation and a report on the introduced bamboo varieties and techniques of cultivation .
(2)Produce a national report on domestic bamboo varieties.
(3)Provide a market research report on the bamboo industry at the beginning and end of the project period.
5. Promotion of bamboo industry in Nicaragua:
(1)Construct the Bamboo Promotion and Design Center in the National Park of Fairs.
(2)Organize 10 nationwide bamboo handicraft exhibitions.
(3)Hold two national bamboo handicraft design competitions.
(4)Hold two seminars on innovation in bamboo handicrafts for a total of 60 people.
(5)Conduct 10 community wide hands-on experience sessions on bamboo handicrafts

Projected Benefits: (I)Project impact:
After project completion, Nicaragua will have a basis for developing the industrialization of the bamboo industry, effectively increasing the value of the Nicaraguan bamboo industry by 30 percent.
(II)Project results:
Increase in the use of bamboo among bamboo craftsmen in Nicaragua and raise theiraverage income by 50%.
