Taiwan Assisting Ecuador in Enhancing Fish Farming Skills

Faced with insufficient stocks in its marine fisheries in recent years, the province of Santa Elana in Ecuador has identified an urgent need to establish fish farming skills for the production of chame, a species of fish native to the country. To draw on Taiwan’s mature and advanced skills, personnel will be visiting Taiwan from August 24 to 29 to attend a TaiwanICDF-organized program of training on marble goby breeding techniques.

As marble goby farmed commercially in Taiwan share a similar habitat to chame, and both species are from the same family, Eleotridae, Ecuadorian authorities hope to take advantage of Taiwan’s experience to establish associated breeding techniques.

The TaiwanICDF has commissioned the Council of Agriculture’s Freshwater Aquaculture Research Center in Lukang to host the training, the content of which will cover the reproduction of young marble goby fry and on-site operational exercises. Through the transference and sharing of associated knowledge, participants will be well placed to assist in the gradual development of chame farming and production upon returning home, as well as breeding fry for distribution to Ecuador’s fish farmers, thereby satisfying market demand, raising farmers’ incomes, and promoting the sustainable development of Ecuador’s aquaculture sector.
