Project Name: Marketing Project (Nicaragua)
Project Description: The project is designed to tie in to the Nicaraguan government’s Zero Hunger program through operations that will complement three other projects under implementation by the Taiwan Technical Mission: the Horticultural Crop Production Improvement Project, the Rice Production Improvement Project and the Swine Breeding Project.

Overall, this project will:

  1. Horticultural Crop Production Improvement Project: Establish a multifunctional horticulture center and help to raise product value by promoting the grading and packing of produce.
  2. Rice Production Improvement Project: Conduct demonstration activities and assist cooperatives to market rice.
  3. Swine Breeding Project: Establish product branding and sales channels for pork products, and assist farmers to sell live pigs.

Project Objectives:

The objectives of this project are:

  1. Horticultural Crop Production Improvement Project:
    1. Establish a multifunctional horticulture center in Tipitapa and install associated hardware and software facilities.
    2. Provide committee members of production and marketing groups with guidance on product marketing and management, and production and marketing group management; provide assistance to expand supermarket channels.
    3. Assist production and marketing groups to establish basic distribution centers in other regions.
    4. Establish cost controls, stabilize market prices and regulate production.
    5. Transfer the operations of the horticulture center on to the American Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF).
  2. Rice Production Improvement Project:
    1. Provide guidance to eight rice production cooperatives in Sébaco and establish a cooperatives center.
    2. Provide guidance to the cooperatives center to establish group contracts and unify wholesale procurement of unhusked rice.
    3. Provide guidance to the cooperatives center to manage rice sales operations and market produce to major Nicaraguan supermarkets.
  3. Swine Breeding Project:
    1. Establish product branding and sales channels for pork products.
    2. Provide production and marketing groups with guidance on operational and management techniques.
    3. Develop sales channels for pork products and provide guidance on the sale and distribution of pig carcasses to production and marketing groups.
    4. Provide training to government agricultural officers on the distribution of pork carcasses.
    5. Transfer responsibility for the distribution of pork carcasses on to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Implementation Arrangement: Members of the Taiwan Technical Mission will provide technical assistance and assistance for capacity building.
Project Performance:
  1. Horticultural Crop Production Improvement Project:
    1. Enhance fruit and vegetable classification and packaging, raising production volumes to an estimated 504.1 tons for an output of US$206,000 annually.
    2. Provide assistance to form a dedicated vegetable production area in line with the Taiwan Technical Mission’s Horticultural Crop Production Improvement Project.
    3. Conduct training classes on production and marketing techniques for 135 technicians.
    4. Produce eight market research reports.
    5. Conduct national demonstration events for an estimated 4,050 visitors.
    6. Conduct demonstration activities on technical cooperation and promote the Taiwan Technical Mission’s achievements through the media.
    7. Conduct training classes for management teams running production and marketing groups and cooperatives.
  2. Rice Production Improvement Project:
    1. Promote the use of certified rice seed and ensure that rice yields are of sufficient quantity and quality.
    2. Safeguard the rights of farmers and cooperatives by assisting cooperatives to procure and sell rice.
    3. Assist in sales of a projected 15,518tons of rice for an output of US$8,221,920.
    4. Conduct training classes for management teams running production and marketing groups and cooperatives.
  3. Swine Breeding Project:
    1. Assist in sales of a projected 5,800 pigs for an output of US$713,000.
    2. Conduct training classes for management teams running production and marketing groups and cooperatives.
